Successful conference for the Upcycling Trust project !
The progress of the 5 social renovation pilots (Brussels, Cork, Ghent, Lille and Rennes) was presented to regional and EU policymakers at a key conference organized on 1st April by Community Land Trust Ghent and hosted by the City Of Ghent. This conference was part of the Interreg North-West Europe (NWE) funded “Upcycling Trust” project.

During the first workshop on April 2nd, Lucie Cambianica(Habiter2030 – Lille), together with Waldo Galle and Ebert De Roover from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, co-led the opening session of Workshop 1 as part of the two-day collaborative meeting held on April 1st and 2nd in Ghent.
Together, they led the opening segment of Workshop 1, presenting the extensive data collection work conducted between October and December 2024. This research focused on identifying and analysing inspiring initiatives related to the renovation of affordable housing.
As part of the session, they collected the main questions raised by the participants, as well as those they wished to address to the initiators of these exemplary projects. The main aim was to help remove barriers and make it easier for each participant to consider replicating such projects in their own local context.
The next step will be to provide responses to these questions in order to guide and support participants in making these ideas their own. These insights will be shared and disseminated in June.
Keep posted for the publication of our policy recommendations for the European Affordable Housing Plan!
Thank you for speakers Filip Watteeuw, Matthew Baldwin, Sorcha Edwards and Keti Tskitishvili, who highlighted the transformative potential of Community Land Trusts and Organismes de Foncier Solidaire in enabling energy renovation of housing while providing homes that are permanently affordable. Thank you too for the interesting discussion took place with Hilde Reynvoet, Waldo Galle, Ailbhe Cunningham and Gilles Guillaume centred around how cities can work together with innovative local initiatives to address the housing crisis and why circularity and community engagement are crucial for a lasting environmental and social impact of housing energy renovation.
